Transforming Education
The Transforming Education campaign started with a letter petitioning the school district for an Ethnic Studies Class, an Environmental Science class, anti-hate speech education, equity training for teachers, LGBTQIA+ sex ed, and other changes at the school.
The letter garnered 335 signatures and we gained monthly meetings with the superintendent, board president, principals, and other district staff, to further share student voice and advocate for changes. Such as gender-neutral bathrooms, updated health curriculum, climate awareness, pronoun respect, dress code, hate speech education, recycling, and grant opportunities. These meetings are facilitated and always welcome students from outside USL. We also wrote a follow up letter showing community support for the Ethnic Studies and Environmental Science classes which garnered 481 signatures.
After the classes were approved USL members were a core part of curriculum committees for both classes and the interviewing committee for the Ethnic Studies teacher. We have continued to build a working relationship with the school district addressing many issues after more than two years of meetings.
