About USL
United Student Leaders is a coalition of students from across Whidbey Island.
USL started organizing in 2019 and has grown to take on different projects around the community. They started by protesting two local banks, Chase and Wells Fargo, who are the biggest investors in the fossil fuel industry worldwide. USL grew and started the Transforming Education campaign, which successfully added an Ethnic Studies and Environmental Science class to the South Whidbey High School curriculum. In June of 2021, USL coordinated a counter-protest at South Whidbey High School to stand up for these new classes and to show support for the Black Lives Matter sign at SWHS. Also in June, the Climate Emergency Declaration that USL wrote was officially adopted by the Langley City Council, making Langley the 6th local government or tribe to do so in Washington State. At the end of September, USL put on a school walkout climate strike that launched the Island County Climate Emergency Declaration Campaign that they are currently working on.
